What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical treatment that uses micro aluminum-oxide crystals to exfoliate the skin. The micro crystals are lightly blown onto the skin while the suction of the machine removes the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells.
The procedure is non-invasive and can be done in conjunction with a facial. The microdermabrasion treatment will be performed after cleansing of the skin. A plastic rounded tip will be placed on your skin creating a suction from the machine. During the process, the micro crystals are blown onto the skin through a small hole in the plastic tip. Your esthetician will use light strokes over the entire area making sure every inch of the surface is covered. After the entire area has been covered, your esthetician will go back to those stubborn areas such as hyperpigmentation spots, light acne scars or fine lines and go over it one more time to get that extra exfoliation. Once completed, the remaining crystals are lightly brushed off your skin leaving it smooth and clean. After the microdermabrasion, this is the perfect time to extract any black heads that have been brought up to the surface from the suction. This also makes the application of any product easier to penetrate into your skin.
What are the Benefits?
Microdermabrasion has many benefits including diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment helps boost collagen production and smooths the skin for that healthy natural glow. The exfoliation of the crystals also helps diminish the appearance of hyperpigmentation on your skin.
Who is a Candidate?
The great thing about Microdermabrasion is it is safe for all skin types and almost all conditions. If you have mild rosacea, it is perfectly safe for you to receive a microdermabrasion treatment. If your condition is moderate to severe, however, please consult with your doctor before getting any skin care treatments on your face.
Clients with acne are also great candidates for microdermabrasion. This treatment will help with acne scars as well as exfoliating clogged pores. It is great for cleansing the skin of any dirt or oil. If you have deep acne scars however, your esthetician may recommend a modified treatment to focus on those concerns such as a microdermabrasion/chemical peel combination.
Things to Consider Before Getting Procedure?
Even though microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types, there are a few contraindications for this treatment. Clients with active keloids, undiagnosed lesions, or a recent breakout of herpes are not good candidates. If you have cystic or active acne, there are other treatments that will better treat that condition. Clients who have had any cosmetic injections such as Botox or collagen injections should wait at least two to three weeks before undergoing microdermabrasion. If you plan on waxing or tanning the treated area, please refrain to do so 2 weeks prior to your treatment.
